reward for zero mc

An ex-colleague was saying the company rewarded him for not taking a single MC (medical certificate) for half a year.

Something is amiss here. There are reasons why employees take MC. It could be genuine ill-health, could be bacteria-filled workplace, could be psychologically harmful working environment, could be insane workload, etc etc. Rather than rewarding those who don't take up their entitlement, why not help those who really need attention?

Taking MC is an employee's right and entitlement (subject to doctor's professional judgement, of course). If I don't take my next month's salary, are you going to promote me straight to become director?

  • Haha, I like your arguments. So my company will pay a lot of "attention" to me since I always use up my 14 days MC entitlement :P

  • I think the intention behind is good, rewarding employees who are healthy (the assumption is no mc=healthy). The assumption may not be a perfect one, but I don't see a better alternative leh.

  • maybe i'll need to reorganize my thoughts a bit, it may not be that bipolar in nature (in which no reward = penalty). But when you think of it, performance appraisal is a bell curve, someone getting better grade means you will lose out, someone promoted faster can also mean you get promoted slower. It may not be that bipolar, but the relativity is still there. It's a dog eat dog world.
