post no e-bill

Lately some of the telcos and utilities companies are offering e-bill to customers in a move towards going green and paperless.

My advice is, don't opt in.

I opted in, and realized that after that I will have to pay a fee for every bill I request them to send to my address. Doesn't make sense, you opt in, they don't give you rebate or discount or reward, but if you want them to do something they have been doing all this while, ie sending you the bill in an envelope with their logo, they charge you a fee.

Then they may argue, you are doing this for the environment. So? Does that mean you have to charge the customer for the bill request? If you care so much about the environment, why don't you allocate a portion of your revenues to save the environment? Oh, so you need to answer to your shareholders. Don't you have to answer to your customers?

Compare cust A and cust B. A goes for e-bill while B still sticks to paper bill. Let's say they charge $1 per bill. In 12 month's time B would have gotten $12 of "value-added service". And remember, once you opted out of paper bill, there is no (way of) going back (unless you pay).

If you want to charge for bill request, at least give some rebates for those who go paperless. Tsk tsk, only know how to take, don't know how to give.

  • Don't they allow you to look at it online? When I do need it, I just email the PDF back to office to print. :P

  • Well, they do allow u to look at the pdf bill online and I do print them when I need to apply for stuffs, and I have no problem with paying my bills (it's an easy Giro-on-demand in my case)

Just that looking at the service provider - customer relationship, I find it unfair to the customers if you have to pay to go back to the previous arrangement.

  • i opted in, since i really detest having bills in my name sent to my home. makes me look extravagant, ya know?

Whats nice about e-bill is that you dont have to be at home to know how much your bill for the month is, since the bill amount will be sent via SMS, and the breakdown can be viewed via PDF in their website. You could be busy doing your business in the toilet when you get an SMS. you open it up and see that your bill has doubled for some reason or another, and you immediately shit bricks. on the spot.

its better for me, actually, since i mostly use home to eat and sleep. i am out working most of the day.

that said, it does seem rather unfair for no incentives to be given to opt in. we save the company postage, ffs! a token of appreciation would be fine. say, a song download every month, even if they dont want to give a rebate. that would be nice.
