new toy - gakkenflex 35mm twin lens reflex camera

I just got myself a new toy - Gakkenflex 35mm twin lens reflex (TLR) camera. Comes bundled with parents' nagging.

While I am not really a photography person, I've always read about the scientific kits that come with the Japanese magazine Otona no Kagaku (大人の科学). I also find the colourful Blackbird, fly, another TLR camera, pretty cool. But like Lomo cameras, it's not really cheap (and I don't usually spend that kind of money). So when I saw the Vol.25 Otona no Kagaku comes with the camera kit, I brought it home.

I unboxed the kit pretty much expecting something like when opening a box of Gundam, but the parts were already in their individual pieces, saved the trouble of plucking and leaving behind ugly bits. Oopz, I forgot to mention, you are supposed to assemble it yourself. There were lots of screwing involved and a handy screwdriver came with the kit. It took me more than an hour to finish assembling the camera.

It really felt great to assemble a camera yourself. You could see all the mechanism inside and the physics involved. To see the image on the viewfinder, +1. By the way, on a TLR you look down into the viewfinder, not horizontal. And the image is laterally inverted.

Next step, get some 35mm film and start shooting. Time for some analog fun.

EDIT: first roll of film developed!

  • is the 35mm film expensive?? and how about the developing of the films??

  • the film itself (if you are talking about iso200)is about S$5, plus minus. The developing will cost you below 20 bucks I think.

  • Haha chey 35 mm film is juz the normal film I can get in stores everywhere. Only realize after I surf the net, haha. Feel like a kuku, anyway I bought the mag n toy cam too. Currently kino at taka out of stk but the sales assistance say that will hav new stk comin in weekend. But I bought mine at liang court kino, still hav lots of stks. U r right it's affordable but nt as fun as I anticipated tho coz of the shootin range n it's onli gd for very brightly lit subj that this cam is gd. But amazing that I actually get to build my own cam, it's like a childhood dream kinda thing. I wished it came wif the leather strap they show on the pretty mag model tho.

  • haha anyway yeah, I am expecting some shaky pics without the strap. Desperately trying to find a matching strap.

btw, film is hard to find nowadays, supermarket and convenience stores not selling them anymore.

  • haha... i realise that too coz i went in a 7-eleven askin if they sell.

when i open the film box, i realize it was super long ago since i last use film.

well if u manage to find one identical to the one the pretty model is using do inform here. im lookin at some push carts sellin hp accessories and even leather shops. so far havent find anything suitable.

btw i was wondering after i take a picture, if i under turn the knot before i take the picture wont the image overlap? i hav yet to start takin any photos and im blamin it on the weather, overcast skies recently. plus night festival better to stick to my digital cam.

  • If you under turn, I believe the images will overlap. The gakkenflex is a tricky toy to play, can't wait to finish my first roll and post my field report here :)
