mc fallacy

A friend was sharing with us that during a meeting, her department head told the whole department that he hasn't taken any MC (medical certificate) for the 7 years he is with the company. That reminds me of the time when I went for a job interview at a particular manufacturing firm, the interviewer told me he hasn't taken any leave for the past 3 years.

Although it wasn't explicitly stated, but in both cases, what the bosses were trying to do was to dissuade you from taking any form of leave, medical or annual. And to both cases, my thought is the same: who gives a flying damn whether you have taken any leave for the past century or not?

Not having taken any leave doesn't necessary mean you are hardworking. You haven't fallen sick for the past 7 years can mean your workload is so light, it won't even kill a bacteria on your fingertip.

Seriously, they will be happier if you work for them for free. That's why, if you are unwell and need to take MC, take. If you have a life outside of work, do take your annual leave.

  • some companies do have monetary rewards for people who don't utilize their medical leave each year. but i think the reward is not enough to deter me from taking medical leave if i'm really ill, or if i really need a rest.

    also, as u said, nobody gives a flying damn whether or not u use ur annual leave, so just take it. it's an entitlement - it's not something complimentary - u worked for it! unless u tell me that the unclaimed annual leave is encashable, then i might understand if u need the money.

    even if u just take the leave to rest at home, and u don't really have anything special to do or anywhere to go, just have a good rest. it keeps u sane, refreshes u, and helps u to not be obsessed with work.

  • I so agree with you. There's a reason why some call annual leave as "earned leave", cos we really earn it.

    I think it makes perfect sense even to take leave to "nua" at home.

  • i love nua-ing! :P and i don't find it wrong to take MC to recuperate if u're overworked. a lot of doctors will give u MC for being overworked (u'll be surprised, really) - all u have to do is to tell them that u're really overworked, really need rest, feeling malaise. n they'll grant u 2 days of MC.

    i'm not saying that people should abuse it, but clearly the MOM allows for 14 days of paid medical leave for a reason, right? so... use it!

  • Working in Europe may sound nice but it's really not that easy given their pro-Euro protectionist employment policies.

    Asia is where the growth is going to be, and where there is growth, work-life balance is again desirable but hardly feasible.

    Someone told me recently the term nowadays should be work-life harmony and not balance.
    That is, barring that you set up a hostel in some mountainous region and wait for the tourists to come pouring in :)

  • What's wrong with taking MC and leave? If the doctor deem that you are sick and need the rest, the boss can't do anything. As for annual leave, it's my rights. I am entitled to take it as long as you are not taking it too often.

    I find it is foolish for those who don't take leave or MC. Company won't appreciate your hardwork.

    P.S. I am on leave today to take a break from my work :P

  • Yeah, not all companies appreciate hard work. Anyway for annual leave, that interviewer told me, leave is your entitlement, but subjected to approval... Sounded like threat lor.
