penny press machine

XinYun and I bumped into a penny press machine at Suntec City. Being very curious, we decided to each contribute S$1 to see what a pressed penny is.

(warning: heavy use of Singlish and high pitch voice of excited boy in the video)
Please pardon me. Spur gears make me high. How come her phone rang just when she had just inserted the coins?

It is said that the first pressed penny appeared in 1892. What the machine does is, it has the reversed image of the design, sort of like a mold. So when the user cranks the handle, the coin (not the coin you inserted) is fed in and is pressed under great pressure until it becomes oval in shape, and with new imprints on it.

This is the end product. Didn't photoshop to skew it ok!Users get to choose from the 4 available designs on the same machine. Do check it out if you are curious!

  • Uh. I dont think its random, you need to twist the dial to choose the design you want and then twist the crank to let it out.

Or maybe the one I saw is different to that one :P

  • yup it's not random, user gets to choose the design by turning the handle.

Think we didn't know it when we were figuring it out :P

  • Oh HK disneyland has this! My crazy friends went around collecting every single design there was -_-''' but they change colour after a while with oxidization, so a little disappointing.

  • oooo i have a REAL pressed penny which i pressed in London. They really asked you to insert the penny that you want to press and you just twist the dial (only one design). It's my "Lucky Penny" :)

  • i made a FAKE pressed penny cos it's illegal to alter or damage legal tender in Singapore. Can't help it. And they need to earn your 2 dollars.

  • Actually you can see this at most of the major tourist attractions across Europe. I've heard of ppl going all ard collecting these pressed pennies. =X

  • wah going round collecting pressed pennies! Ok, sounds like collecting passport stamps isn't enough for those travelers :)

When I was in Hong Kong I saw that some tourist attractions have rubber stamp and ink pad for visitors to stamp on some visitors' passport or something, equally meaningful i guess.

  • oooo i didn't know damaging legal tender is illegal in SG... or rather, i'm just not aware enough. now i know! :)

  • now you know, so don't go and scribble telephone number on your notes or try to be funny and make a cut (the old joke of tearing a bit of the 10 dollar to get 8 dollar)

  • Hi,

The US penny is not fake. It's real US penny. It's legal to press these pennies. But it is illegal to press Singapore coins. You can check out the pressed penny website to read more about it.

  • It is a real US penny as you look at the picture of the design pressed, at the background you can see the State building and the words 'One Cent' on it.

  • Hi there, I understand that the penny is real. My previous comment on "fake" was aimed at another commenter who stressed that hers was real.
