fine city is getting more fine

Our fine city is getting more fine. Or should it be, "finer"?

Just as I saw law enforcement officers catching jaywalkers at traffic crossings, now they are getting serious at people who eat and drink in the MRT train. Commuters can be slapped a fine of at least S$30 for taking a sip from your mineral water bottle or sucking on your lollipop.

I thought you only can't eat hamburger or drink from a straw in the train, going by the picture.

Frankly speaking I have no problem with other commuters taking sips of water or popping a candy into their mouth. But reading the reports from printed media, it seems like those categories aren't spared. Seriously, if you go by how much inconvenience it brings to other commuters, those who lean on the pole should be fined at least 60 bucks, those who don't move in to the centre of the car should be fined $100, and those who blast music from their handphone should be fined something like $500 minimum.

Now, how about giving cash rewards to those who offer their seats, or fare rebate to those who choose to remain standing throughout their journey?

  • yea!! totally agree with you. drinking PLAIN water should be allowed right, not like they're drinking soft drinks or what. but i've seen ppl drinking bubble tea, eating bread/chicken rice/waffles on MRT before, which is like absolutely ridiculous!

YEA FINE THOSE WHO LEAN ON THE POLES, THOSE WHO DON'T MOVE IN, THOSE WHO READ NEWSPAPERS OPEN IT BIG BIG, THOSE WHO BLAST MUSIC, THOSE WHO TALK LOUDLY ON THE PHONE...

  • relax relax... maybe they are worried people may spill the water everywhere...

actually I'm fine with people eating :P the worst is I will feel tempted to get the same food

  • jus imagine some tourists who do not know what a "fine" city we are and started drinking/eating in the MRT. I wonder if they will be spared from the fine?

And i tink they're just making a big hoo-ha out of it now (to instill 'fear'). They should really question the rationale (which i tink is mainly scared of ppl dirtying or littering around the place) of not eating and drinking in MRTs.

I'm fine with eating in trains (did it regularly while overseas =X) so long as ppl dun make a mess out of it and clear their rubbish properly. Maybe should just change to a 'no littering' fine instead.

  • I dunno, but if an American comes and scratch cars in Singapore, does he get caned? :P

Sitting on the floor in an MRT is as good as littering, right? :P

  • Yeah! Blast music = 500 dollars!!!

Freaking heck, so many idiots doing that!

But you know, there are people who eat in trains, they got reported by a civic minded person but all they got was a stern talking to. Whats the point of having fines when the officers themselves dont want to enforce it.

    So bochup

  • rinaz: cos the civic minded person didn't press the "emergency button located at the side of the train door" :P

    star alliance: lol!

    I'm fully support this.

  • the music is the real irritant, not the food or the plain water.

  • totally agree with you!

  • I agree. Singapore's regulations is quite ridiculous in the sense that they are v, v, v rigid. Can tell you about my Nparks experience offline man.

  • i thought only the laws are rigid, now even the people are rigid.

Talking about rigid body like in mechanical engineering.

  • yeah i love the last part, i take the train from tampines to buona vista every weekday to and fro and i stand throughout! maybe i should have a 50% rebate, and maybe more since i always hide in a corner of the train, staying as unobstrusive as possible

  • haha I think should also give u a medal for being a good passenger, then you can pin it on your shirt and wear it while taking the train :D
