beijing subway eat fresh

It is always a new experience taking a ride on another country's rail system. The Beijing Subway was no exception.

Built in the 60s and originally planned to be used during wartime, the Beijing Subway is now the second largest underground railway network in China, second only to Shanghai. With lines to the airport and serving the Olympic venues, the Beijing Subway helps to ease the traffic on the ring roads on the surface. Even at this moment new extensions and lines are being built.

Regardless of distance, each trip costs 2 yuan. No wonder the staff gave me a weird look when I told him I wanted to buy a ticket to a particular station. Me noob :P

The only thing I find inconvenient on the Beijing Subway is that there are mandatory security checks at all station entrances. All bags have to go through the x-ray machine. Taking the subway feels like catching a flight.

  • I love trying out the subways / metros in different countries too! :)

Does Beijing's go right to the airport yet? It didn't before. I miss Beijing.

The trains look newer too. They must have had a complete revamp for the Olympics! :) I went the year before the Olympics, I think. Hehe!

  • yup the airport express was opened last year. It will be convenient to go from airport to town.

If I'm not wrong only the newer lines have newer trains, some lines still have old trains :P

  • Same for in Italy, every trip is 1 euro regardless of the distance. But of course, here dont have to check bag. Only once a while the officers check your ticket at the exit to see that you didnt enter for free.

  • Heh in Delhi also need to check bags and body, security seems tight, they even have a stand-to post with sandbags at the entrance to the station.

  • wah, body also need?

I guess that's cos of the bombing, that's why they stepped up the security level there. I'm just glad we don't need such measures in Singapore.

  • Woah security checks when entering the metro station? Wouldn't it create a long queue?

If SG got these measures, i think raffles mrt will be jammed packed in the morning and evening... HaHa

  • maybe that will encourage people to travel empty-handed :P

  • Looks like the trains and station are pretty empty. What time were these pictures taken?

While I can't say about stations, an empty train in Singapore is hard to find at most hour of the day. So much for being WORLD CLASS. Pfffttt.

  • It was around 9pm, but then again, Beijing people wake up early and sleep early.

I was pleasantly surprised to find seats on the train, seriously.
