transport with keropok

A few days ago I had a nice email conversation with a blogger friend. (ok, it sounds kinda primitive, nowadays few would exchange email unless it's email war) He just came back from his Europe trip and he shared with me what he observed on the transport system there. I hope he doesn't mind me sharing here :)

He said that in the trains in London, people also don't shift to the middle of the carriage. That sounds like a global phenomena, isn't it? :P He also had the chance to ride the new London buses after they got rid of the routemasters. He sounds impressed.

Oh and he mentioned the Oyster Card, which is similar to our ezlink card. It seems to have more friendly features than ours though.

It is interesting to note that both Hong Kong's Octopus and London's Oyster Card make use of seafood name, and my experience with the Octopus was fantastic. Maybe Singapore should come up with the Crab Card!

  • Long time no talk! =D

I agree that the "seafood" card systems are easier to use, cos u don't have to be afraid that u forgot to tap the card when u get down the bus.

And yes, I know my dream is funny, I'm also amused with myself. Haha

  • anonymous: I don't get the rationale behind not refunding us fully for ezlink card...

breadtree: then right from the start should call it crap card liao! :P

    averii: -_-"

am|go: hiya! I kind of feel that having to tap out when alighting, increases the mental workload of the commuters.

By Blogger chillycraps, at 11/11/2008 07:17:00 AM

  • but at least tap-in-tap-out pay less right... cos 分段收費…… you tap once in HK but it's super ex lor..

By Blogger fiefie, at 11/11/2008 07:33:00 PM

  • but, it also encourages people to take short distance ride, and the short distance between bus stops doesn't help. This will slow down traffic as a whole and also traveling time in general.

On the other hand, people in HK are more willing to walk the distance.

  • anon,
yup, we bought oyster card for the whole family and top it up 20 pounds each. at the end of the holiday, right at the airport, we could refund all the unused portion and unlike EZLink, they don't keep a few dollars for the card deposit.

also, there's a max cap of usage. Once you reach have tap-in-tap-out and reach a certain $ cap, your subsequent travel is free, it will show $0 for that trip. if only they have that CAP fare in Singapore :-)

Crap does not start with O, Octopus and Oyster starts with O. LOL, unless you all it Oh Crap! Card.

  • ROFL!

Thanks for coming in to reply, keropok! The concept of "maximum purchase" sounds attractive!

  • by the way, the Oh Crap card sounds nice. Haha

    By Blogger Am|go, at 11/13/2008 03:43:00 PM

  • they used to have a cap of $1.90 for buses

but now they increased the transfer rebate from 25c to 40c, they removed the cap
