SIM vendor and telecom Operator nowadays has upgrade the SIM card algo to COMP 128 v3 or to USIM(3G) algo, it is been known that this algo is unbreakable, because it is using a bigger and longer HEX as the secert key. Brute force will take 20 yrs to decrypt. Also the SIM will have a counter as a 10 normal usage will not exceed a number. Chip manufacturer such as samsung or infineon has a hardware built into the chip which can detect unusual voltage, causing it to meltdown if detect voltage differences. SMS now is not saved into SIM card, but directly saved into phone memo.
SIM card is a smart card, and it is 1 of the safest place to store data. So much RnD is invested into it.
