a part or apart: choosing university

(disclaimer: since I am in one of the universities, this post may be biased)
It's the time of the year for choosing university and 2 of the local top universities are all out to grab some gray matters. Advertisement in MRT stations, in printed media, in blogs (yeah yeah NTU ads appear in this blog. Where's NUS'?) Let's look at the different approaches employed by the 2 universities.

You're just another statistic. I mean, what more do you want?

aha, I see individualism.

NUS hired a mobster throwing a Molotov cocktail while NTU has dragged one guy and one girl out for the advertisement. Personally I really think it's like putting the 2 on the altar. How many of us out here can actually secure scholarship and stuff? C'mon, I don't even get father-mother scholarship.
(by the way the guy in the NTU ad is from aerospace engineering and is currently doing his attachment behind my brother's desk)

My advice is, don't listen to my advice. Go to the open houses and explore what the universities don't want you to see.

NUS:
15 March (Sat) to 16 March (Sun) 2008
9am to 6pm
Sports & Recreation Centre, Kent Ridge Campus

NTU:
8 March 2008 (Sat)
9.30am to 7pm
School of Biological Sciences

  • Why didn't you include smu?

I always liked looking at the jumping people on smu's ads on the newspapers coz they look so darn happy. Wonder whether smu students are really that hyper in school...

  • Actually i dun quite get what NUS's ad is driving at.

    " You're juz another statistic."

Machiam you are just another ordinary applicant mah??? Not unique at all. If i m a potential applicant, I will dump NUS as a choice.

That's how i interpret leh... what do u all think?

  • The second slide of the NUS ad says "Not to us you're not - come discover how you can stand out at NUS".

Didn't mean to be biased, but... I feel that this is a badly-thought-of, ungrammatical sentence for an ad. :P

  • snowie: smu? what is smu?

    (hope sylvia won't see this)

It's very hard to compare cos smu doesn't offer engineering.

wenxiu and hendri: LOL! to be honest both universities' advertisement are a bit "duh"... in fact NTU's makes more sense. I just don't like the individualism part that's all.

    SIM is the best =P

  • you have to give credit for NUS' honesty. you are just another statistic whether you can accept it or not. if i'm an applicant i will want to know how NUS will help me overcome that problem. at least that's better than the pro-green image that NTU wants to project especially when it generates tons of garbage plastic utensils and styrofoam cups and plates daily just because the canteens want to "save cost" from washing real plates and utensils. besides individualism is overrated anyway especially in singapore where the nail that sticks out almost always gets hammered down.

  • wow chill chill, yeah I do have bad experience with NTU canteen's plastic utensil.. the spoon cut my lips.

Maybe NUS' message is more down to earth realistic?

By Blogger chillycraps, at 3/09/2008 09:47:00 PM

  • man, that was fast. do you live on your blog or what?

anyway, i'm quite chilled. the plastic utensils breaking is actually a bigger problem especially when you are trying to eat a piece of chicken.

but the issue here are the two ads. i appreciate NUS' 'down to earth'ness as you said. its time universities are direct and honest rather than sugarcoating words and trying to flatter students. NUS is simply stating a fact, if you don't like it, go to another university. stop acting like if you don't apply for NUS, it will close down from not receiving your precious tuition fees.

by the way, i'm from NTU. and i love it here :P

  • actually, my blog is part of my life =P

could it be the different style in the 2 unis? In NUS I guess a lot of teamwork is emphasized, whereas in NTU they groom a few heroes? *shrug* I dunno, I could be wrong. But if you are good, people will go to you.

yeah I can sense your NTU-ness from your previous comment. Guess we are already in our respective shit, there is nothing much we can do but to love it.

  • NTU FTW!

  • ftw = f**k the world?

    =P

And don't get me wrong, the students in NTU rocks, it's just... i dunno.
