ranting on nus ranking

The Times Higher Education Supplement's World University Rankings 2007 was out on November 8 and this year NUS' ranking took a dip from 19 to 33.

Blame it on scoring revamp? Or should we be humble about it and keep working harder? It is funny to see that when people praise us, we quote them; when people say not so nice things, we wave them off. Zaobao published something interesting that Straits Times didn't.

Ranking drops of course won't feel that nice. But when I asked a friend from Business School what she feels about it, she said what can we do about it? Change school meh?

On the other hand, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) squeezes itself from 33 last year to 18. Not a bad idea, I heard their canteens serve nice food.

Hmm... Yeah, things are funny that way in Singapore.

One good example of this would be how MM Lee recently cited, during some kind of talk, international reports which said good things about Singapore to show how Singapore is prospering under the PAP Government...

But at the same event, when someone questioned him about Singapore's level of press freedom, citing the Reporters Sans Frontiers' report about how Singapore is ranked 146 out of 168 nations for press freedom, MM Lee dismisses it and also said something about how he doesn't measure himself by the standards of external international organisations...

Hmm... Perhaps MM Lee listens to Gold 90.5FM ("only hear the good stuff")...

  • LOL, I listen to Gold90 as well.

    how ironic things can be~

  • I think there is no need to take this kind of report seriously, especially one done in UK. Look at how many UK universities moved up the ranking! It's obvious. I am sure they will change the criteria again but be sure many UK universities will be there, including those no one has heard of. A university is considered good not be means of such ranking.

  • hmm ok, but the annoying thing is, when the same agency gave us relatively good ranking last time, we quoted them happily.

so why the change in heart on our part?

an example: it's like when a guy was still with her ex-gf, he loved her so much, praised her, etc. Then when they broke up, he started saying nasty things about her...

  • I think it's quite an irrelevant article.

Isn't it normal for the local newspaper to write stuff that support the local stand?

I mean, could you even imagine the Straits Time publishing the following headlines:

    "Pedro Branca undoubtedly is Malaysian."

I promise you, some heads will roll after that.

  • that's Singapore.

I'm not talking big about press freedom, but in places where the printed media (eg, newspaper) act as watchdogs of the government, well they do what a watchdog does.

But my focus here is actually on what our president Prof Shih said in response to the drop in ranking.

  • Hey, I think that's better than NTU.

I think our President just kept his trap shut and decided the university has to buck up.

    Time for some head-cutting..
