why i don't drive

Recently there were a few people asking me why I don't drive. Ok, I don't drive, I can't drive, and I won't drive. My family had been bugging me for it also. But why learn driving when you are not going to drive anyway?

Although my blog is blowing smoke everyday, but I love the environment. Why increase the carbon emission? And what's wrong with taking public transport? Even if your fantastic eco-car has zero carbon emission, you are still going to take up road space. Not very nice to be one of those whom I curse and swear at during traffic jams.

If I really am driving, I think this car is cool...
The Kärcher ICC 1. It is definitely environmental friendly and doesn't take up much space. Don't you find it cute?

  • Hear hear!

I also 同病相怜 as you... I also sortof never felt the desire to learn how to drive and/or to drive. Although, of course, like any other normal guy, I still turn my head to look at beautiful cars when I see them on the road. Haa...

My family and relatives also sometimes bug me about me not wanting to learn how to drive. In fact, an elder relative of mine, on learning that I don't want to take driving lessons, said to the effect of: "什么不要学?!一定要去学!"...

I think it's worse for us guys; somehow people place greater expectations on guys to know how to drive. Oh well, I never really liked conforming to people's expectations...

Really don't understand why people want to drive in Singapore. It's environmentally unfriendly, expensive (COE, road Tax, soaring petrol prices, season parking, parking coupons, increasing ERP rates and etc) and incovenient (finding parking lots). Public transport much better. But then again, from what I heard from some of my guy friends, they partly want to learn how to drive and have a car due to the "incidental benefits" (i.e. girls are more attracted to guys who drive?)...

Oh well, I think I better not 把话说得太绝, just in case I end up next time driving some petrol guzzling SUV... But for now, I don't drive and I don't see any problem with it...

  • yah, they always say national service time is the best time to learn driving, blah blah blah, then say next time you work, your company give you a car to drive also dunno how to drive...

oh recently they say CTE 5 bucks right?

aiya if the girl wants you cos of your car, then forget about her lah.

  • Haa... I NS is AI trooper, surely they cannot expect me to learn how to drive AFV or tank and convert the licence into civilian licence, right (assuming that when you say NS is best time to learn how to drive, you mean that NS drivers can convert military driving licence to civilian licence)?

Yup, today's newspapers got report say ERP increase by another 50 cents... No wonder they say ERP = Everyday (and Everywhere) Rob People...

And yeah, I also said the same thing to my friend who once said on his blog about how girls won't be attracted to guys like him who don't know how to drive. Haa... In reply, I also said something about how girls will perhaps be more attracted to guys who don't know how to drive but can afford to hire chauffeurs to drive for them...

Hmm... All this talk about guys, cars and girls suddenly remind me of this witty exchange from CSI...

Sara: Please tell me there are something more to this guys and cars thing, besides the obvious penis extension metaphors.

Greg: So you want me to lie?

  • Well, if u working as a engineer next time, when u go out and meet ur clients, think need to drive right ? :p

  • I agree with you too! My mom is really forcing me to learn to drive and I'm kinda pissed at her. I don't really see the need to, though it's really interesting to watch the coordination and all. Learn for the skill lor, then next time can car pool also mah.

  • lcc: I don't mean conversion, but most of them think that during NS, you don't need to study and so you have time and energy to learn driving... well a lot of people learn during NS also.

kay: well.... meeting clients can flag/book taxi. But you have a point there =)

    jasmine I agree!!

tstar: yah, learn for the skill, just like first aid. We may not need to do first aid but maybe good to know lah.

  • i have to made an embarrassing confession here... i failed my basic theory test!! and it's suppose to be the easiest test... urgh...

anyway, it's true that some girls are attracted to guys with cars.. sometimes i wished i knew someone who has a car to send me home every day=P

but taking bus together is fun too..

anyway, if u are learning driving, must tell me k? i desperately need some motivation to learn driving... hate taking bus 95 every day....

  • These days, the free carparks in NUS also hardly got any space. If u reach after 1030, chances are dat there wun be any parking .. I drove there last time at noon .. There will be drivers in their car prancing in the car park waiting for parking slots .. Once someone alight from the bus stop, u can see the cars all going towards that person and following him til dat person reaches his car :p Darn scary ..
