the engineer, the undergrad, and primary school maths

One evening, the undergrad was about to sleep when his engineer brother asked him a primary school maths question:

Vehicle 1 takes 7 hours to get from A to B; vehicle 2 takes 8 hours to get from B to A. If both starts moving at the same time towards each other, how long does it take before they pass each other?

The undergrad tried to smoke out an answer by applying his newly-learned kinematics equations, ended up with 0 = 0. He couldn't be bothered and went back to sleep.

The undergrad rolled a few times on his bed, then sprung up, went to his engineer brother, grab a pen and paper, wrote 2 simple lines of equation, solved.

Then he went back to sleep.
(while his brother was whining how to explain to the kid)
Lesson of the day: if you can't solve a problem, go and sleep.

  • hmm.. why not use modelling to answer the question?

might be easier at the end of the day.. lol..

explain to kid ah?? then i guess have to tell on the spot how to explain already.. muz put in real simple terms.. lol

  • if i was the one explaining, I could end up stating all assumptions... what constant velocity, zero acceleration... blah.

  • How about using the concept of relative velocity? I think it helps

  • yup, the answer requires relative velocity. =)

  • eh.. hello.. u're not answering a PhD question.. primary school question k??

    use simple terms la.. *whacks!*

  • still, must show them that the world out there isn't that simple.

  • This is an interesting qn, becoz they do not supply the total distance. This will put off most kids.

Driver A- In 1 hour, he travels 1/7 of distance.

Driver B- In 1 hour, he travels 1/8 of distance.

Together- they travel, in 1 hour, 1/7 + 1/8 of distance = 15/56 of the distance.

    Time taken (just inverse)for them to complete= 56/15 = 3 11/15 hours.

Haha, the pt where they complete the distance together is the point where they meet, becoz they are in opposite direction. They both combine with their own share to travel the whole dist together, before they can meet!

  • yup yup, but dunno if primary school kids know algebra or not. With algebra it is easier by quite a bit.

  • Haha they are encouraged not to use algebra. Algebra are anti-maths and contagious to them.lol.

This qn combine inverse and speed,wah.........should have let my students do b4 PSLE ;p

  • that sounds evil... =P

anyway I think the important part is to let them understand the relative motion of the two.

  • Mmm yes..... :)

youre a tutor now? bored in the morning now..

By Blogger mr fong, at 10/09/2007 08:27:00 AM

  • nope, i'm too stupid to be a tutor. Don't want to teach kids bad things and end up wasting their parents' money.
