don't underestimate me

If you want to judge me by my CAP score,
then you have made a terrible mistake.

A couple of months ago, a German engineering company headhunted me. But then, they made a mistake too. They thought I have just graduated.

My Plan A was screwed 3 years back, luckily or unluckily; my Plan B and C were screwed recently. So now I will work on Plan D.

Honestly the specialization thingy affected me quite a bit. It's like I was cooking dinner and I over-fried the fish and tried to boil broccoli without water. My pillow was dry last night though, cos before I went to bed I came up with Plan D.

There must be a reason/reasons why the department put certain criteria for the program. Maybe they think you can't handle the load? Maybe they want to maintain the quality of our engineers? Maybe, maybe, maybe...

Now even without being enrolled into the specialization program, I can still opt to read those modules, just that when I graduate I won't have the specialization cert. C'mon, I have a living example right in my house. My brother graduated with mechatronics cert, now plays with material science in an aerospace company.

  • Specaialise? I don't believe in it anymore. Because people's interest change over time and that specialisation is just a stepping stone for our next phase in life.

Awesome! All the best in whatever you are pursuing!

  • Hey, dun worry too much about specialization. The CAP serves as a guideline or quota to eliminate any 'excess', rather than picking students with higher CAP. Moreover, I managed to get my specialization this sem (after appeal) despite my CAP is below the criteria.

Initially, I was discouraged by the system, so I din apply for specialization during yr3 sem2, but later I found out (from my seniors) that the CAP criteria only serves as a guideline and enforce when they r in a fix if the quota exceeded.

Anyway, no harm trying, like wat u said, worse come to worse, just take those related specialization TE modules (like I did previously).

Btw, wat specialization u opting for? You can email me if u r interested to find out wat specialization I'm in and I can tell u the approach to secure ur specialization (despite <3.5 but no guarantee), cos I'm afraid students might start complaining and spoil market, which consequently deprive other students below the criteria CAP from getting specialization.

  • wishbone: haha, that's why they are pulling down Specialist Shopping Centre at Orchard!

tstar: I think I got up too fast..

swave: I think I'll adopt an insurance policy. Oh I'm looking at product design, which requires 2x level 5000 modules.

  • why too fast? getting up fast is good ah.

  • it feels almost like I haven't thought over it properly

  • hmm. at least you have an idea now, better than feeling despair. plans can always be changed/improved on. at least now you can concentrate on deciding what to do and have not given up totally.
if you meant dwell and think abt what has happened, think it through for a while, take whatever you need then put it behind you already. no point dwelling, really.
in any case, do whatever you feel you need to do, but try not to dwell over it for too long, yar?

  • Congratulations on being headhunted though (although it's 2 years early..) I'm sure they'll be back for you when the time comes.

Yep, don't worry too much about specialisation or CAP.. companies will definitely look beyond that, even if NUS doesn't.

  • thanks tstar and matt.

In fact now I find shortcomings of the thing that I so wanted before. (eg, lecture from 6 to 9 pm...)

  • I don't understand what CAP what specialisation what jargon... But I know the phrase 'CHINS UP!' Good luck with Plan D!

  • "i get knocked down, but i get up again"

    i like that phrase=)

that's what i believe in too. just bring yourself up and move on.

i may sound like i'm preaching here, but life is full of twists and turns. who knows, a nice surprise awaits you later? even if you can't get your specialisation now, that doesn't mean you have lost all possibilities to reach for that interest you have right?

  • Sometimes it's fate. The smaller things that don't happen is preparing for the grander things in life. :)

And when you get it, you will know how to appreciate the good things in your life.

  • thanks missy! The CAP is something like GPA in other universities, 5 is maximum. As for specialization, it's like in mechanical engineering there are also a lot of sub-groups, such as offshore, automobile, precision, etc etc.

hi snowy. Yup, I'm going to go for my interest MY way! Thanks!

hi vuvie! You are tempting me.... haha thanks!
