Spokespersons from both SBS Transit and SMRT say that staff are empowered to fine commuters who irritate others. This is according to a clause in the Rapid Transit System Act. Commuters can inform MRT staff when they encounter other commuters displaying inconsiderate behaviour. If offenders refuse to cooperate after the advice from MRT staff, they can be fined up to $500.
