invited research lecture

This afternoon I attended an Invited Research Lecture by Professor David J. Ewins from Imperial College London & University of Bristol. The topic of the lecture was "Modern Modal Testing Technology: A Tool for Design and Troubleshooting of Today's Machines and Structures"

Prof Ewins is the guy in vibration engineering. You can check out his past and present appointment here. Other than the part on finite element analysis (FEA) and scanning laser doppler vibrometry (SLDV), I really catch no ball on his presentation -_-" But sitting in a room full of PhD and MSc, guess it would be abnormal if I an undergrad understood the stuff.

It was fun watching Zee Monster getting to some of the audience =P

  • Hey, it's normal. Chances are, the majority of PhDs and MScs in the audience will not be able to follow 90% of the lecture either.

  • wow... that sounds even more abnormal!

  • Research is too specialised these days for everyone to understand everything. It's very sobering to realise that no matter how cool your research sounds to you, there'll only be a handful of people (out of 6 billion) who would (a) have heard of your specialised research field, and (b) actually care.

  • that makes sense.

If the research doesn't have a clear impact on people's everyday life, there's no reason why people should care. Till now I still don't see what's so important about quantum theory.

But if say they make a new iphone, then everyone (exaggerated) goes mad about it.
