products and processes

I observe that when people talk about academic performance (at least at my level) they will link it to our junior college; whereas for conduct, character and behaviour, they will link it to our secondary school.

The other day when I went to see Tuan Seng (aka A/P Chew) to get back my test paper, LipTon (the famous 1 out of 6) was in Tuan Seng's office discussing about his test marks. When Tuan Seng knew that both LipTon and I were from the same junior college (in fact same class) he got the (wrong) idea that people from my JC are good at maths. -_-"

Yesterday I was talking to the twins from ME2 and we were talking about our batch of old boys from our secondary school (we were from the same secondary school, somewhere along Bukit Timah Road). We conclude that most of us have become "堕落". There are quite a number of my sec sch's old boys in ME2 and most of us are just the average Joe. Maybe none of us make it to Dean's List =P. Classic example of "小时了了, 大未必佳".

But people always say that boys from Chinese schools have good characters. Come to think of it, most of the ME2 guys who came from my secondary school have neat short black hair, presentable attire, no piercings, although I must stress that these are by no means indicators of good and bad, maybe we are just not trendy. On the other hand, old boys from this secondary school situated next to the cemetery are quite happening =P Again, happening is a neutral term.

Seems like it's not that wise an idea to send your kids to branded secondary schools. Or is it?

  • Haha.. also don't know what to say. But I wasn't from a very branded secondary school lah.. maybe only branded in sports.

But yeah, I have to agree with you that most guys from Chinese schools are "not so trendy". Haha.. I'm a classic example!!! :)

And yes, 小时了了,大未必佳. I also agree with you. Haha.. but no choice. Maybe we all think that we're so good (in the past), that we all 堕落?

    Haha.. I really wonder.

  • Mr Chow,

    This one I must comment.

Pple from this secondary school beside a cemetary...you're referring to Maris Stella what!!!

That's not entirely true, I have neat short hair, no piercings and don't smoke nor drink.

(I do admit I'm a little on the heavy side though).

But not true la, character is from within. If you were an ass in sec school, it doesn't translate to you being an ass in university.

And I don't think we have 堕落, it's just whether our talents are marketable or not.
Being in good in ur academics is just one part of life, there are so many other aspects you need to balance out.

For instance, you're good at blogging, so you haven't exactly 堕落 so much. How many 1st Class Honor pple actually can relate their thoughts as well as yourself?

    Think about it.

  • fab your sch quite branded, at least I know who was your principal.

you... trendy what, everyday adidas. =)

the 堕落感 is quite weird, maybe when you are high up, you fall great.

janan: I believe you are the minority within your sch. Guys from your alma mater now in NUS are quite stylo~ Again, those behaviors are not definite indicators of anything.

lol, what a way to say i am not 1st class type =P

  • Maybe because in secondary school, you have four years to mingle around, make friends, discover yourself and have fun...

Some more, it's at that age when kids are trying to grow up and developed their identity...
Besides, 'O' levels is easy lar...

But then, in JC, you only have two years...
Two freakings years (!!!) to pull up your socks and cram hard for exams becos if you fail to get into Uni, you would have wasted two years of your life getting nowhere...

Same for me, when I told others what my JC was, they will go something like "Orh... That JC the PE very chiong one arh?!?"

    Oh well...
At least they know that we are errm... Very Fit...

  • Hello, in case you dunno who am I, I am Hok Him. I think I know you but then can't remember where. Should be either from BMT gryphon or OCS foxtrot.

Ya, the people in ME from my secondary school (another chinese school), which is in the west and wear white shorts for 4 years, also have short and black hair. haha.

By Blogger LoHokHim, at 3/31/2007 12:18:00 AM

  • averii: exactly, our 4 years in secondary sch nicely falls in our growing stage. Wah, O lvl easy ar...?

hokhim: I know you~ Foxtrot =P Surprise surprise to see you here~ So how's your leg? Your sch in the west... hmm.. anyway Hui Ting has dyed hair and he was from my sec sch =P

  • All the stuff u said...are relative ;)

Come to think of it, it's really bo bian. This is a dog eat dog world, cat scratch cat world. Hehs.

In PSLE level you up up against the full cohort, by 'O' levels you might be facing 3-quarters of the number of ppl taking PSLE. By 'A' levels, it would probably be a third of those numbers in PSLE. And by uni, well you should know that it's you against a couple thousand students only.

So, the playing feel is essentially different la...Not that you're worse off, but the better ones seem to be more significant now, and as for us we just happen to be feeding the better ones by taking the lousier grades cos of the stupid "BELL" curve.

By Blogger Zεηιτħ, at 3/31/2007 04:13:00 PM

  • that's something I haven't thought of, the sampling size.

but then, what I observe is, those doing well in university are mostly from neighbourhood schools.

maybe those from top secondary schools have used up their nitrogen boost too early.

By Blogger chillycraps, at 3/31/2007 04:18:00 PM

  • Well...
Maybe except for English, Chinese, Geography and Social Studies...

Cos these are the subjects I have struggled with in Sec Sch...
    (Thank goodness for moderation)

But for the rest like maths, science and accounting...

It is quite easy lar, not much thinking needs to be done...
Just apply the formulas and methods...

  • woah..

now we know who to borrow tutorial solutions from.

By Blogger chillycraps, at 3/31/2007 05:00:00 PM

  • Long hair, smoke, drink, have piercings and come from school next to a cemetery (Marist stella). I fit the bill.

    Alex

  • and good result.

By Blogger chillycraps, at 3/31/2007 10:14:00 PM

  • Anyway, i believe that school is just a launch pad for the next phase of one's academic life. Good and bad schools have good and bad students.

By the way, is Janan; Janan Lim Yao Chen?

    Alex

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3/31/2007 11:15:00 PM

  • hok him: hi! i think we're from the same school. yeah i observed the ppl from our school in general are 'not very trendy'... lol

maybe those from top secondary schools have used up their nitrogen boost too early. Or is it that those good ones are overseas? If not then i have used up my boost too early.. haha.. i didn't perform too well in JC and it was a challenge adjusting back after 2 1/2 years of not studying...

I wrote something relevant to this issue on my blog a while back... here goes

By Blogger matthew, at 4/01/2007 02:48:00 AM

  • alex: you have a point there. Good schools have baddies and bad schools have goodies.

And you got the right Janan.

matt: woah, i must start charging for advertisement space liao =PP just kidding lah.

By Blogger chillycraps, at 4/01/2007 07:58:00 PM

  • haha... then you can be like Xiaxue...

maybe those engineering firms can 'advertise' for their internships or positions here...

By Blogger matthew, at 4/02/2007 11:33:00 PM

  • hmmm... let me hunt for some engineering firms.....

anyway, don't compare me with xiaxue, she doesn't crap.
