elephant pump

Saw this interesting video at Engineers Without Borders.

Built by an organization called Pump Aid, the Elephant Pump actually comes from a 2000 year-old Chinese design! Using basic materials and simple design, the Elephant Pump can bring fresh underground water to the people in Zimbabwe. This is how it works.

With my lousy fluid mechanics, if I ever join this kind of project the most I can only help mix cement...

  • Amazing, but why is it called 'elephant pump' huh? Why not called it 'cycling pump', 'winding pump' or 'ball pump'? Does that imply elephant transports water through its truck using the same principle?

  • I'm not very sure, but my guess would be the pipe where the water is drawn up resembles an elephant's trunk sucking in water from a pond.

I'm sure there isn't any rope inside an elephant's trunk =)
