special occa$ion$

Let me see, how many of our festivals and occasions are not commercialised?

I remember my father used to say businessmen created Children's Day, Father's Day, Mother's Day, etc so that they can earn big bucks. Does it mean other days you don't respect and love your parents? Does that mean normal days children cannot bug parents to buy toys? =P Valentine's day is the best, first you clear the old stock of chocolate, then the girls become fat and they go for slimming.

Just when I thought it's only the western culture that has the label of capitalism on them, our Chinese New Year has it too. I just went to have a hair cut this afternoon and they have raised the price from $7 to $10! What the, did they like use scissors made of gold or what? Then I heard the price of bak kwa has risen to $50/kg this week... erm they roasting gold pig? And all these years what I can't understand is how come a box of 魚生 ingredient can cost up to $20 when it's just sliced ginger and carrot inside? Fine, gold-plated.

In a closed loop system, everything is conserved. You try to earn more by raising price, you will lose more elsewhere when others raised theirs. Kinda stupid cycle.

  • my manicure prices was raised from $40 (for my usual services) to $63 when i went yesterday. the prices tmr for the same services would be $80. wanna beat that?

the thing about commercialisation is that because of the very standard of demand and supply principle, the demand for all the corresponding goods and services will increase, and hence bring up the prices of the goods. it's not really a closed loop because everyone will still want to buy these over-priced stuff.

  • Singaporeans(Chinese) are like that. They try to 'squeeze' you dry whenever they have the opportunity to do so. One such significant example is the increase of prices in some retail outlets prior to GST rise to 7%.

  • last week when my brother went to cut it was only raised from $7 to $9, this week it has become $10! Does it follow an exponential graph or something?

But one thing is, the demand is always there, so consumers are to be blamed. Though it also reflects how badass the business people are. No I don't mean business school people.

  • my mommy explained why the cuthair places must increase prices. she said those who cut hair usually come from overseas, so cny they want to go back. Hence this is their only chance to raise the price to pay for the trip back.

Unlike those who have full time jobs, they don't have bonus too, so this is their bonus lor. makes some sense i guess...

I won't say that the hols were created for businessmen coz I'm sure there's a story behind each day, but that the business people jumped onto the wagon...
