male: 961, female: 1000

The Hong Kong government just released the 2006 Population By-census and guess what, the sex ratio of males to females in 2006 is 961:1000. (sex ratio doesn't mean who have sex more often... but the population lah!)

To put it simpler, there are more females than males in Hong Kong! Yay, let's go to Hong Kong to find girl friends! But then again, there must be a reason why Hong Kong males go China to find women...

oopz, actually the sex ratio for Singapore is 982 males per 1000 females in 2006. Not enough guys to go around? Well, does that explain why are there so many "third party"? And then again, why are there more and more Singaporean males going to Vietnam to find women?

Relationship is not as simple as 1+1.

  • there are not enuf GOOD guys to go around. 1/2 of them have probably slept around with many other girls (not including girlfriends) and find nothing wrong with it. How to trust a person like that? And they want either a virginal bride or one who cooks for him everyday and treat him as king, gentle gentle. Want somebody traditional, yet also want the girl to be modern.

  • Hmm... From a sociological point of view (yes, I am taking SC1101E this semester) and looking at the statistics, Singaporean women prefer to marry up while Singaporean men prefer to marry down... In other words, lowly educated men find it difficult to find a Singaporean bride, thus they decide to find foreign brides...

Anyway, tstar, it seems to me that guys are not the only ones at fault... Like the saying goes, it takes two to clap... Some girls also have quite high, if not unrealistic expectations e.g. don't drink, don't gamble, don't smoke, don't use swear words, be taller than them, allow them to have free space but be there always for them, don't look at other girls when they are with them, etc... And the list goes on...

I guess the fairy tales we hear when we are young created a lot of unrealistic expectations in both genders... Guys looking for Snow White/Cinderella (and Princess Fiona?) while girls are looking for Prince Charming/Shining Knight on a White Horse (and not Shrek?)...

  • did they change the SC1101E syllabus?

  • eh but u never account for the fact that males tend to die younger, thus all other things equal, there should more females than males.

  • lol, or we can see it as a healthy sign.

see, when Singaporean guys find wife from oversea, their wives become Singapore citizens, thus bringing up the ratio of females to males, or even making it more females than males!

just that, the number of single local females remain the same =P

  • yar, lcc, agreed lah, both parties at fault.

  • Hmm... CSH, in reply to your question about they changed the syllabus for SC1101E, they may have, they may have not... I won't know since I got nothing to compare the current syllabus with, considering that this is the first time I am taking the module...

All I know is that the main lecturer AP Tan has been and is quoted in the local newspapers quite a lot... I mean, just last week, his photo appeared for the article which quoted his comments about the Budget (I think it was reported that he said that the Budget will reduce income inequality)...

By Blogger LCC, at 2/23/2007 10:25:00 PM

  • A/P Daniel Tan? y is he being interviewed about the budget...?! His specialty is sociology, not economics!

By Blogger tstar, at 2/23/2007 10:50:00 PM

  • No... The main lecturer for SC1101E now is AP Tan Ern Ser, not Daniel Tan...

By Blogger LCC, at 2/23/2007 11:03:00 PM

  • Oops, and I think he's not Daniel "Tan"... haha.. sorry.... same thing still holds though - why sociologist for the budget... TST is weird.

  • the main point here as what lcc brought up is that females want to marry up while men want to marry down, or at the very least marry their respective equals. that leaves two very big group of people unmarried.

also from a biological point of view, (i read this somewhere) older sperms more often produces the female making chromosone while younger sperms produces more male making chromosones, and as we all know, people are marrying later, having children at a later age, so it's no wonder that there are more female babies.

  • A/P Tan Ern Ser taught me SC1101E a few sems ago also.

hmm, I dunno leh, I know a guy from army times he had premarrital sex like before 20 and all his kids are girls...

When ppl can't find a partner, they will know how to lower their expectation.

  • Haa... The last line from your last comment reminds me of this joke I just saw from my friend of a friend's blog...

"Sex is like bridge (my note: as in the card game, not the structure that people use to cross rivers). If you don't have a good partner, you better have a good hand".

By Blogger LCC, at 2/24/2007 02:46:00 PM

  • Well, tstar, perhaps the newspapers were asking him for his comments on the sociological, not the economic, effects of the Budget...

By Blogger LCC, at 2/24/2007 06:27:00 PM

  • anyway for a sociologist, anything to do with society would be of his/her interest.

    lol @ your joke!

By Blogger chillycraps, at 2/24/2007 09:01:00 PM

  • well.. i cant comment much.. since the topic has changed to a sociology thingy.. tat requires chimology..

simple man here wanna put in a few words..

different people have different views.. henceforth.. the union of man and woman.. i choose someone as my gf or bf cuz i THINK he/she is the right one for me..

but it doesnt mean that in the long term.. we will be together as husband and wife..

therefore.. this is all perception.. it all depends on how u find the other party.. agree with one of you saying it takes two hands to clap.. and without the two hands.. basically.. the clap would not have any sound.. AND THEREFORE..it's all up to the two of the people in question.. lol
