northern island xhaustion

Came back from the Northern Island Xpedition organized by the NUS Canoeing Sub-club yesterday.

I was kind of cheated into joining by hj cos I really knew noone there (actually I know a lot of them, just that they dunno me), and hj being in the committee had to take the single kayak while the participants like me took double kayaks. By the way that kid was the one who drove the lorry and transported the kayaks to Changi. Impressed.

The particpants ranged from year 1 to PhD students, and the level of proficiency from no experience to 2 stars generals like me. Actually it doesn't matter much about your experience, you don't sink can already.

I partnered with Shi Yao who was my Sec 3&4 classmate. Actually both of us kayaked in Ubin together (not same boat though) before. I did a lot of stupid things yesterday, such as my favourite water spraying with the paddle which I picked up during ODAC days. hj got it worst from me. Then I was passing Shi Yao's oreo around on my paddle, then the whole packet rolled off into the sea... when I picked it up it had become soggy biscuit (boy's school guys should know the joke)

As for the organization, hmm... the navigator was way too fast and he didn't take into account the sweeper's distance. The right marker also seemed like kayaking side by side with the navigator, so the supposedly diamond formation (which they didn't make known) became like kite or sometimes inverted triangle. The navigator also asked for a raft-up way too close to the rocks, not a good choice. And the beaching up was messy. And they didn't do a floating test for out PFDs (personal floatation device) Ok fine, most of the committee members are year 1.

Anyway, now I can appreciate free-surface effect more. When the inside of your kayak is half-filled with water, you'll know how it's like. What metacentre?

  • Arrghh... Reading this post of yours reminds me of how long I never go kayaking liao (not that I particularly enjoy kayaking but I sortof miss it)...

In fact, come to think of it, I very long never go near or into water to even swim liao (guess me still too shy about my lack of good physique... haa...).

Hmm... Soggy biscuit...? I thought that one also overseas boys' school then have... You mean Chinese High also got practise it...?

  • Eh you call me a kid!!!

  • lcc: you can always sign up for activities by the canoeing sub-club, they are pretty no-frills.

I don't think Chinese High got soggy biscuit, but not sure about Rafxxxx...

hj: I was afraid my readers don't understand the word "ah dee", so kid lor. I think sunday group had a different kind of fun... singing in the rain?

  • kayaking sounds fun!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12/18/2006 03:41:00 PM

  • it is, but when the currents and waves and tides are going against you, and when your kayak starts to transform into yellow submarine, you can't stop swearing.

By Blogger chillycraps, at 12/18/2006 03:59:00 PM

  • Hmm... Thanks for the suggestion... But I think I will pass on it... I only miss kayaking, not kayaking expeditions... Anyway, I rather go kayaking with people I am more familar with than to sign up for something and end up that the only person I know in the group is myself...

Ok, I will take your word on that Chinese High don't have "soggy biscuit"... "Rafxxxx"...? Hmm... Are you referring to the school whose uniform resembles that of our country's governing party...?

Anyway, if I'm not wrong, this "soggy biscuit" is supposed to be a game... But, as far as I know, games are supposed to be fun & enjoyable; I don't see how in the world can "soogy biscuit" be fun... Yuck... (shudder at the thought of it)

Yellow submarine...? Kayak leak water...? Or don't have spray deck (or whatever the thing which is attached to the kayak to prevent seawater from going in is called)...?

Haa... I just realised that "kayak" is a palindrome, that is it is spelled the same way forward and backwards...

Hmm... Yea, going against current is tiring but also more fun & challenging... Can train arm power and crash into waves... All the way follow current flow too relax liao... Of course, I'm saying this while sitting in the comfort of my office chair in front of my computer and not in a kayak paddling against current...

  • they do have shorter trips, like up singapore river that kind. You can always drag a friend along or make new friends there, as I've seen on that day.

They usually don't give spraydeck unless you are proficient, and since there's quite a big variation of proficiency, having a spraydeck may not be a good idea. We were cutting the wave straight and the water just rushed into the cockpit. Inconsistent strokes also brought water in via the paddle...

  • hmm...so nice...miss kayaking too :p ... dun give u spray deck coz scared will capsize den get stuck mahz :P but it must have been terrible without one... to see water rush in..haha...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 12/18/2006 11:52:00 PM

  • it would be worse if the water leaked in from below and you can't see it cos you are wearing a spraydeck!

Anyway I can't imagine doing an eskimo roll on a double kayak!
